  Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and the Florida Board of Education have agreed that slavery was more beneficial than damaging to pupils in public schools. The shift is part of a new African American history standard released on Wednesday, in which schools would teach students that slavery assisted certain Black individuals in developing important abilities. The state teachers’ union termed the decision “a step backward.” Florida’s new standards The Florida Department of Education published a paper on the 2023 social studies standards that details how slaves learned skills that might be exploited for personal advantage.
