Diego Maradona's Medical Team Faces Trial for Negligence


The trial of eight medical professionals suspected of criminal negligence in the death of renowned Argentine footballer Diego Maradona has been mandated by a judge. Following a medical review that uncovered deficiencies and anomalies in Maradona's care, the judge has ordered a culpable murder trial. Maradona, who was 60 years old, passed away in Buenos Aires in November 2020 due to a heart attack, after undergoing brain surgery earlier that month. Prosecutors in Argentina initiated an inquiry into the physicians and nurses involved a few days after his death. The panel of experts, consisting of 20 individuals, concluded that Maradona's medical staff had handled the situation in an inappropriate, defective, and dangerous manner. The trial, where the accused will face charges of homicide, has yet to have its date determined.

Diego Maradona, widely regarded as one of the greatest football players of all time, captained Argentina to victory in the 1986 World Cup and famously scored the controversial "Hand of God" goal against England in the quarterfinals. However, his career was marred by a suspension due to his cocaine addiction. Diego Maradona's passing in 2020 triggered immense sadness in the football community and throughout Argentina. Thousands of grieving fans lined up for hours to pay their respects to the football legend at the presidential palace in Buenos Aires. Despite the toll that years of drug abuse and his difficult brain surgery had taken on his health, there was a widespread sentiment in Argentina that Maradona, who was only 60 years old, had been taken from them too soon. The subsequent findings of the medical panel investigating his death further intensified the need for answers and clarification surrounding the circumstances of his passing.
